Ballinamore offers anglers, beginner and experienced alike, a wide variety of angling options and is generally acknowledged as being an “Anglers Paradise”, due to the fact that there are 28 lakes within a 8km (5 mile) radius and 17km (10.5 miles) of riverbank. Ballinamore has also hosted numerous national and international angling competitions and is a first class location for game and coarse fishing, with some of the cleanest and most lightly fished fresh water bodies in Europe and Ireland. All waters are continually monitored for their fishing quality by the local Angling Association.

Fishing in Ballinamore is varied and there is a wide array of species available locally from the Tench and Rudd fishing of lakes Willowfield, Corgor, Bolganard, Drumlonan and Corduff to the Bream and Roach fishing of lakes Gardice, Drumcoura, Keenheen, Drumlea, Scur, Templeport, Lakefield, and Lough Rowan.
Course fishing species available include, salmon, pike and brown as well as rainbow trout. Wild brown trout are resident in all the mountain rivers and streams in both Cavan and Leitrim and there is also a very well managed brown trout fishery at Rowan Lake which is home to brown trout weighing up to 15lbs (6.8kg). Very good salmon fishing is also within driving distance on the river Drowes.
South Leitrim also boasts two popular fisheries, Lakelands and Toomans, which are stocked with five different species of carp including, common, mirror and ghost carp along with Roach, Rudd, Bream and Tench. The Shannon-Erne Waterway, also known as the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal flows through Ballinamore.
