Sean O Heslins GAA Club in Ballinamore will hold two annual North South reading symposiums, bringing together readers groups in Cavan Fermanagh, Leitrim and Tyrone. Themes explored will include belonging, identity, voices of others and remembering from Irish, British and international authors.

Anglers from the UK, from Belgium, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe are enjoying a great season angling in Ballinamore especially Coarse and Pike Fishing.

2011 McGahern Seminar

The theme of the 2011 seminar is Mc Gahern and creativity. Dr John Kenny, John Mc Gahern lecturer in NUI Galway says ‘The role of creativity in all areas of innovative thinking is inceasingly recognised.’

The seminar will involve guided visits to John McGahern’s homeplaces in Aughawillian, Mohill and Ballinamore. Just up the street from Hamills B&B is Pat Mc’s garage and Maggies shop. John described his aunt’s shop beside the railway station and opposite his uncle’s garage. A grantie seat is located in the square with the inscription ‘that they may face the rising sun’.

depicts various aspects of Irish life and Irish Culture. Drumshanbo is the only centre in Ireland where An Tostal has survived. Accommodation close to Drumshanbo for dates of An Tostal is still available at Hamill’s B&B in Ballinamore.

Sliabh an Iarainn Walks start from Aughacashel Post Office which is situated between Drumshanbo and Ballinamore. Please telephone organisers in advance to confirm walk (+353(0) 719641569).

Hamills provide packed lunches for groups or individuals.

Transport can be arranged for collection from bus or train and transport to walk start point and collection at end if required.

The All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Cavan in 2010 saw many followers of Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance stay at Hamills Bed and Breakfast in Ballinamore. They enjoyed relaxing accommodation in Ballinamore, shared some Irish songs and tunes at Hamills, then took the leisurely spin to Cavan where the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil organisers had a park and ride system in place.

McGahern Summer School

Hamill’s Bed and Breakfast, Letrim, welcomes visitors from NUIG for the 4th McGahern Summer School. It takes place July 21 – 30, 2011. Being close to Lisacarn, Aughawillian School, Maggies Shop and Pat Mc’s Garage, visitors choose to stay at Hamill’s and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of Ballinamore – known as the Friendly Town. The countryside around Ballinamore remains as Mc Gahern describes ‘these fields have hardly changed at all since I ran and played and worked in them as a boy’.
